NEW BLOG ADDRESS!!!

A variety of factors have lead to me trying a different tack this year. It's been great using the Blogger format. Being able to do all this for free and learn a bit about 'how things tick' has been great. It's made it easier for friends and family in faraway places to keep up with what's been going on in my life.

Anyhow, a choice has been made and I've decided to set things up on 'wordpress'. So jump on board and see what's going on!

Indian Summer Pension Kayak Tours

Monday was another beautiful day here with hardly a breath of wind and clear blue skies. One problem...No Surf!! I decided that once I'd got around to cleaning the house, washing the clothes and bedding and getting the kitchen in order, that I'd borrow a SUP board and take it up to the lakes in the hills behind Kamogawa for a paddle. Just as I was finishing up, Hiroshi "Indiana Jones" Nakazawa from Indian Summer Pension in Kamogawa called and asked if I was keen to paddle some kayaks and check out the autumn leaves. I had no hesitation accepting his kind offer and gave another friend, Sei, a call to join us.

This autumn has been a long warm one and the water temps are still pretty warm. November 30th capped off a gorgeous Indian Summer with a few people out enjoying the weather and waves.

Autumn leaves are just starting to change colour. In another week or so the colours will be even brighter. It's a beautiful time of the year to go up into the hills surrounding Kamogawa.

Beauty lies in even the smallest of things. You just need to keep an eye open and explore!

It's been a successful last month or so for Kamogawa surfers in domestic contests. Masato Watanabe took honours in the Volcom Sashimi Series Event held in Kamogawa with three locals in the Final.

Miho Ihara had a great season on the Women's JPSA Short board Tour and was recently crowned Grand Champion. Also deserving mention are Hiroe Tahara (4th) and Rina Kitazawa (6th).

In the Men's JPSA, a couple of young guys got their Pro Licences (Aoi and Hiroki) and the rest of the boys put in consistent performances throughout the season to secure good seeds for next year.

On the Long Board scene, Yocci won an event @ Niijima and Hiromichi placed 3rd.

Mizue Oguri placed 2nd in an ASP WLT event held in Miyazaki and the got her Pro License @ Keramas in Bali at the last JPSA Event of the Year.

After a false start back in early October due to unfavourable conditions, we were blessed with swell and sunshine. The waves were actually a little too big for a lot of the competitors who were restricted to surfing the inside reforms (as getting out the back took a bit of skill and luck at times). Lots of smiles and happy people made for successful day. Big thanks to Maki @ Surfshop Bloom in Kamogawa for all the hard work to make the event possible. Also, to all the volunteers offering their time to help set up, judge, MC, serve food, hand out singlets, keep time, take photos and calculate scores as well as all the sponsors for the prizes...THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

千倉の Indy's PIZZA

It seems I've been eating a lot recently. Maybe it's the cooler weather or something. I'm not sure.
Anyway, last Sunday when Tokyo friend Hiroco (website HERE) was out visiting, we went for a drive down to the best pizza joint round here, Indy's Pizza in Chikura.
We ordered a bunch of pizzas and I can honestly say they were all fantastic. While the Teriyaki Chicken Pizza took pole for me, it was the consensus of the group that the Shirasu Pizza was #1. Can't wait to go back!!

An American hamburger chain, selling Korean burgers in Japan that use beef sourced from Australia and New Zealand. Tastes good enough despite the burger looking nothing like the one in the commercial. Definitely recommend the 'double' as the patties are paper thin.

To celebrate my wife's birthday, we went out for dinner at 'Italian Restaurant Kids' in Kamogawa with good friend Sei. The food was delicious! We had a couple of pizzas and a salad to get into the swing of things, then ordered this chicken dish!

It really hit the spot (so much so that we tried to emulate the dish a few days later in the comfort of our home and with some success I might say! Good Job SEI!!).
To wrap up the occasion we ordered desserts, a rarity for me when I dine out, but a good way to top off a fine meal.

Thank you to all the staff for making it such an enjoyable evening.

Halloween 2011 was a little different @ WinBe than in previous years. Instead of a 1 day "Wham-Bam-Thank-you-Ma'am" deal it was stretched over a week with lots of little parties within each class. We needed a costume that was both functional and easily recognisable (while not being too scary). One of Dave's students, Sakura-chan, came up with the suggestion of being the Super Mario Brothers of Nintendo video game fame.

We both fit the basic body types required and without further ado we started looking into putting together costumes. With the season being autumn and heading toward winter, local stockists were out of overalls so Aiko tracked some down from a supplier on the Internet and an order was placed. Next it was across to the 100 yen shop for some hats and felt material, with which we made our badges, buckles and moustaches. We tracked down some white gloves and Bingo, Bob's your uncle!

Lots of good things going on this past weekend.

Kamogawa local girl, Mizue Oguri, surfed her way into the final of the ASP Women's LQS Pro Longboard Event presented by Real B Voice in Nichinan, Miyazaki, Japan, in only her second ever LQS event placing 2nd to Hiroka Yoshikawa. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!
The men's title was taken out by Bonga Perkins from Hawaii. (photos from the ASP website)

The All Blacks, lead by captain Richie McCaw, marched through a challenging semi final with Australia, yet again raising the bar, to claim the second finals berth and will play France next Sunday, Oct 23rd. (Video highlights HERE)

And lastly, a student of mine, that attends Kisarazu Sogo High School and is a member of their Taiko drumming club, had a show at a local shrine in Amatsu, near Kamogawa.
I have seen his group playing on a YouTube clip at an event near Mt Fuji (see below) and have wanted to see them play live ever since. The Taiko drums are amazing and the passion and energy that goes into playing them puts tingles down your spine.
My hat goes off to them for their dedication and pursuit of excellence as the show was AMAZING. Here are just a couple of pics I took.

Bloom Surf Shop USER'S MEET 2011

This board was shaped by Taro Taniuchi @ Grace Surfboards in Kamogawa for Dave Yamaya Pro and is his DY-3 Model. It paddles great and feels really solid and smooth when you push it hard on rail turns. I got a lot of confidence in the equipment riding this board and had a lot of fun surfing it!

Huge thanks to Dave for both the photos and lending me his boards to try out and use this weekend in the local K-SOS Contest. Mahalo to Taro Taniuchi @ Grace Surfboards, too!!

My first overseas surf trip was to Indo and I spent a month hanging at Lakeys Peak in Sumbawa with some great friends, Zane, Andy, Pierre, Dave and Rich. Also met some great people along the way including a very young Timmy Turner, his mates and chaperon/cameraman who were classic for laughs and ripping groms. That wave at the start of this video is still one of my favourite fun waves to surf! It looks just like it did back in 98! The only difference is that we had to walk around the bay to get there (in the hot sun) instead of taking the boat that runs now or riding bikes...but it was always well worth it! Great memories...

OFUCHI Shape TEST!

With an eye to getting a new board shaped, I've started doing some research. Just like buying a car, it gives you more confidence in your choice if you've test ridden a model first and get a grasp of what all the small/big differences in design offer a boards performance.
OFUCHI (shaper) from GRACE SURFBOARDS here in KAMOGAWA was kind enough to let me borrow and ride his new 'SUPER FREAK' model. The board was really fun to ride, quick and easy to turn and able to nose ride.

Some friends gave us some Sazae (turbin shells) the otherday. We usually eat them on the BBQ, but as it was midweek we decided to try something different. I recalled having fried Sazae in Shimoda, Izu, many years ago at an Izakaya with good friend Take-chan. So, we gave it a crack and came up trumps! !

We've had gorgeous weather all week with temps around 30 but without the humidity. It's a bit what I remember summers being like back in NZ, especially with the cooler nights. There has been waves everyday and the forecast is for more swell in the coming days with typhoons #15 and 16 to the south of Japan. THIS IS WHY I LIKE SEPT/OCT/NOV SEASON!!!!

Day 2 and I was free and able to join the fun. I was given the responsibility of being one of the drivers of the Dashi (kind of float). Usually this is reserved to special families with a long history with the shrine and community, so it was a real honour. This was the third year I had been given the opportunity. Guiding the Dashi through some of the narrow back streets can be challenging at best. Fortunately, the day passed without a hitch. The kids (and adults) playing the 'taiko' drums did fantastically as did the veteran flutists keeping the music flowing right through the day with a great showing in front of the station. Well done and otsukaresamadeshita to all those involved!

Big weekend coming up. The Rugby World Cup kicks off in NZ this Friday and hosts New Zealand are in the same pool as Japan and will play each other in my hometown, Hamilton Sept 16th, 8pm (NZT)

There is also a Matsuri Festival in Kamogawa this Saturday and Sunday. This year the portable shrines will gather on the grassy area in front of the condo where I live on the Saturday night. It's always a good time and a great chance to get to know all the locals in your neighborhood. Unfortunately, I'll miss Saturday due to work commitments, but I'm looking forward to Sunday!

Kanpei-san in Kamogawa Event

Kanpei san is a Japanese comedian in his early 60s that circumnavigated the globe, sailing and running. It took him a fair while and right in the middle of it all he was diagnosed with cancer. He took a little time out, had treatment for it and then continued with his quest. When he completed the Earth Race it was extra special given the ordeal he had been through.
Anyway, when Kanpei left Japan, sailing for USA, he cast off from the Kamogawa Marina in front of the condominium where I live. He returned recently, giving a presentation as well as unveiling a sign to remember his feat. The city threw a party of sorts and had tents selling beer, food and more beer, as well as a stage where the girls entertained us with their Hula and Tahitian dancing. They then had a special fireworks display with hand held fireworks that was pretty impressive and must have singed some eyebrows to wrap the day up. Good times had by all!

The Coromandel: Hot Water Beach!

Surf wise, this was THE DAY! We got up super early and hit the road again. Driving past the iconic L&P bottle in Paeroa it was still almost dark. Having heard there was a pumping bank at the north of Hot Water Beach on the low tide from a local up that way, we decided to skip Whangamata and the crowds and head to the more secluded northern Coromandel beaches.
Stopping only in Tairua at the bakery for a custard square, a pie and an ice coffee, we made good time. Half way up Pumpkin Hill is the Twin Kauri Reserve where we stopped briefly for a quick history lesson and photo then down to Sailor's Grave to check what swell was on offer. The sun was just rising and the sky was perfect clear blue with a light off shore breeze feathering the lips of a nice consistent clean ground swell. Perfect!!

It was hard to leave, but with the promised land just around the corner we all jumped back in the car and drove the remaining 25 minutes or so to our destination. There were already about half a dozen cars in the car park and a bunch of campers with there spades heading down the beach to dig out their own little hot pool. Wetsuits on, sunscreen on, fins in and boards waxed, we hit the beach running!

Obon Vacation

Usually at this time of year I'm packing up the car with camping gear and surfboards and heading off on a mission to find waves either in Fukushima, Miyagi or Iwate in the north of Japan. However, following the disaster in March and the nuclear fallout that has affected much of the area we decided to stay closer to home.

Early on there was a low pressure system forming that looked as though it may develop into a tropical depression or even a typhoon which would've brought us plenty of swell and homegrown entertainment. It wasn't to be though, and instead it's been pretty small right throughout the week meaning the old single fin long board got dusted off and paddled around. The weather was pretty good though, so at least the BBQs got a good workout.

Mt Maunganui & Natural Hot Springs

To give everyone an idea who doesn't know or isn't familiar, this is a birds eye view from the Mount of the thin strip of land known as Mt. Maunganui. A magnificent stretch of beach and one of the fastest growing populations in NZ.

This was probably one of the longest days during our week's holiday in NZ. With Rags flat and swell beckoning on the East Coast I decided to check out an old haunt, Mt Maunganui, where I used to hitchhike to and learnt to Lifeguard at back in my high school days with friends Chris and Justin (Merp). The place has changed unbelievably so over the years. What was once a sleepy surf town with classic kiwi baches and spacious backyards is now a lively happening place with massive cruise ships filled with tourists from Australia and beyond as well as sky high condominiums and apartments lining the main beach. However, it still hasn't lost that cool beach vibe that attracted me to it back in the day and we even managed to score some fun uncrowded waves on Main Beach in the middle of summer. I have a hunch that the island across the harbour was firing that day which may explain the lineup....but you need a boat to access that. Maybe next time.

Moonlight Surf

Holidays started 8pm yesterday and go until the end of the week. With a full moon and good banks at Seaside in Kamogawa, the call was made to kick things off with a moonlight surf. No better way to beat the crowds and cool off after a hot day at the office! Dave called a High School student of ours (and neighbour) and he was in, too.
We hit the water @9:30pm and despite there being a bit of cloud action and haze dulling the light, we all caught some keepers. The waves were pure glass, there was phosphorus in the water dancing around like little angels and the water was warm as! K's mum and dad came down to check it out and took this pic of us enjoying a post surf beer!

A new phone and Soba

Well, it happened. My cell phone for the last 4 years finally gave up the ghost. It had been through a lot, dropped numerous times, traveled to Hawaii, NZ, Australia and around Japan and kept coming back for more. It died peacefully with a nice blacked out screen. The result, I lost all my data (numbers, mail addresses, etc). So, it's a good chance to spring clean and start over. And this is what I got..

The new(ish) white iPhone 4 smart phone. The number is the same as before as is my mail address. If you read this and want to be back in my contacts, please mail me your number and include your name. Arigatougozaimasu!

Being a Softbank customer, I had to go all the way down to Tateyama to sort out all the phone crap. On the way down I stopped at a Soba restaurant in Emi on Route 128. The Zaru Soba Set was ¥900 and was super delicious, just what we felt like. Check it out if you're going past, I recommend it.

Fresh Basil Pesto

I planted a bunch of basil about 2 months ago in a planter box on our balcony and they've really taken off. Not wanting it to go to waste, I decided to try and make some fresh Basil Pesto. A good friend came over and showed me how to make it. It's actually a piece of cake and only took about 3 minutes!

This is all you need: lots of fresh basil leaves, some nuts, garlic and (not pictured) grated Parmesan cheese, a little salt, some olive oil and a little sugar as well as a blender.

K-kun blending away and hey presto. It's done.

This is about a third of what we made in one batch. Good for pasta, pizza, seasoning chicken, etc.

Below is a little pasta we cooked up for lunch. Just add salt and pepper for seasoning as you please. Simple and delicious with great aroma.

R.I.P. Analogue TV

The date for change has been creeping ever closer and closer and was suddenly upon us this past Sunday. At 12 noon, the switch was flicked and analogue TV came to a peaceful end. There was not much trumpeting of this going on, but one or two of the channels here did a little recap of the history of TV here in Japan and a countdown. Fortunately for us, we updated our old dilapidated TV to one of the new Sharp Aquos LED digital TVs several months ago (and never looked back). There's been an ongoing campaign to raise awareness (as in other countries), but I'm sure some people would've been caught out. It also means that the TV on our car Navi is now defunct (not that we ever watched it anyway).

Tonight's dinner

It was another hot day here today, so I was craving a healthy salad with dinner tonight. When I was back in NZ recently, mum made a couple of really good salads and gave me some inspiration to search for something new and experiment. I came across this salad and changed it up a bit. I threw in a sweet potato to supplement the pumpkin, exchanged roasted cashews for the pine nuts, topped it with some cubed cream cheese and added a touch of balsamic vinegar in the dressing. It was a WINNER and will no doubt pop up again on the menu again this summer.

HERE'S THE RECIPE:

Preparation Time

10 minutes

Cooking Time

30 minutes

Ingredients (serves 6)

600g butternut pumpkin, deseeded, peeled, cut into wedges
2 tsp olive oil
2 tsp honey
2 tsp sesame seeds
1 tbs fresh lemon juice
1 tbs honey, extra
2 tbs extra virgin olive oil
2 tsp wholegrain mustard
1 x 150g pkt baby spinach leaves
1 x 75g pkt toasted pine nuts

Method

Preheat oven to 220°C. Line a baking tray with non-stick baking paper. Place the pumpkin in a large bowl. Drizzle with oil and honey. Season with salt and pepper. Gently toss until the pumpkin is well coated. Place in a single layer on the lined tray. Bake, turning once during cooking, for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and sprinkle evenly with the sesame seeds. Return to oven and bake for 5 minutes or until the seeds are lightly toasted. Remove from oven and set aside for 30 minutes to cool.
Combine the lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, mustard and extra honey in a screw-top jar and shake until well combined. Season with salt and pepper.
Place the pumpkin, spinach and pine nuts in a large bowl. Drizzle with the dressing and gently toss until just combined. Serve immediately.

One of my great friends here in Japan, JUN, turned 40 recently. The weather was picture perfect and the grill was brought out to celebrate BBQ style!! We usually celebrate our birthdays at the same time as they fall within a week or so of each other along with another friend's daughter. This year was special though.
Aiko made a special lei for Jun and Kona from locally grown fresh flowers and a bunch of good friends came over with food and drinks. There were lamb chops, tandori chicken drumsticks, high-grade beef, lots of sausages, spam musabi, soba and somen, hormone (intestines), snacks and salads galore. A feast fit for a 40th celebration!
A huge Mahalo for everyone taking the time to join us and bring bits and pieces for the grill making the day so enjoyable.

The weather was picture perfect and there weren't many people about, but the waves were small so I decided to go down to SURF SHOP BLOOM and rent the stand up paddle board to cruise on. Maki was there and gave me a hand to get it all sorted and then I was off. I headed down past seaside and Toshizou-san was taking pictures of some surfers there and took one of me as I cruised past.

When I got down to the Grand Hotel I came across a stingray, probably about 1.5m wing span, and followed him down the coast another 100-200m before I lost him (or he lost me). The waves were starting to take shape so instead of continuing down to Maruki as I had planned, I found a spot by myself and tried catching a few. Good thing there wasn't anybody about as those boards are big and hard to maneuver. However, the paddle cracked as I paddled into one and so after putting it back together in a makeshift manner I slowly made my way back to return the board. It just so happened that another friend had just finished diving for the day and he gave me a couple of abalone (ありがとう！).

I went home dropped them off, picked up my longboard and went for a surf at seaside with good friend Ken from DONYA. We traded waves for a while with next to nobody around and had so much fun. The water was so warm there was no need for wetties, too. That evening, I went to Ken's restaurant and he prepared the abalone. One was sashimi and the other was cooked in a garlic butter sauce.

This is a basic overview of how the rest of the day panned out.

In Tokyo you can see all types of fashion from the conservative salary man approach to this kid with orange hair (partly obscured by my wife...I was too slow on the shutter).

A Japanese 'HOTEL' offering a lot of various plans from the 100min special to overnight stays.

Amongst all the fashion shops, pachinko parlours, bars, Starbucks and electrical stores I found this Violin and Cello shop.

This is the East Entrance of Shinjuku JR station...during a lull. It was twice as busy later on.

Oh the joys of riding the JR Yamanote Line trains. Glad I'm tall and have my own space. The short guys get a waft of everyone else's armpits.

A group of friends from various nationalities enjoy Hula Hoops and juggling in Yoyogi Park in Central Tokyo (although you'd never know).

Restaurants from this part of town in Tokyo, called Shin Okubo, have been on TV a lot recently, especially with the increasingly high popularity of K-Pop and Korean dramas at the moment. The dishes always look mouthwatering and it's somewhere that I've wanted to visit for quite some time now and check off the 'to do' list.

A friend lives in Tokyo and she offered to show us around and take us to one of her favourite restaurants there. I think if she hadn't been there, I probably would've done a U-turn and headed somewhere without the queues. Look at all the people lining up in front of this restaurant in the photo below!

However, she knew what she was doing and had us seated in only about 25 minutes, which given some of the waiting times at other places was mighty fast. While we waited we had time to suss out the menu and plan our attack. The problem was everything looked good.

Good news, the beer is cheap!

Standing outside was thirsty work, so we ordered a couple of draft beers each to get the ball rolling. toasted my birthday and got stuck in to the side dishes that came free with the beers before the ordered dishes came out. I have to say that everything we ate was a winner, but the gyoza took the honours. I think it's probably the best gyoza I've eaten yet!! By the time we left we were well fed and had knocked back several beers each and it only cost about $25-30 each!!! I want to go back!

It's been a long long time since I was last in Roppongi (back when the boys, Andy & Rob, lived in the city). With the development of Roppongi Hills and MidTown the area has been revitalised and has a new edge to it. The Subway station is modern, clean and has more head space than in the past. But you can still buy a beer from the convenience store and drink it on the sidewalk.

This Sunday I plan to head in to Tokyo for the day to check out a friend of a friend's photo exhibition. The exhibition title is "HAWAII - beyond your wildest dreams" by nature photographer JUNJI TAKASAGO. It's a collection of 50 images from the magical islands of Hawaii.

Birthday Boy

Another year older and hopefully wiser. Thanks to everyone for the kind wishes, presents and messages (even those reminding me that 40 is just around the corner). It was great to speak to family on skype and catch up on the news back home. It was a work day so not much to do other than treat myself to a nice bit of meat and a beer (Bill you were on the money!). Aiko was in Tokyo on Monday and splashed out on a really nice cake to top things off.

Hopefully this year will be a little more settled than the last 12 months and bring some pleasant surprises.

The Rugby World Cup in now only a matter of months away before it kicks off in NZ and I'm recruiting supporters here in Japan for the All Blacks.

Got this little fella nice and early and he seemed pretty chuffed about it all. He said he thought the ABs had what it would take to trump all the other wannabes. He also said to keep a eye out for the dark horse, Japan. Under the steady guidance of Head Coach and Ex-All Black, John Kirwan, he figures that they may surprise a few people.

The only sad thing was that we used the last of the "BEETROOT RELISH with orange" that my mum gave us last time we were back in NZ.

びわ, Loquats or Japanese/Chinese Plums

'Biwa' fruit trees originally came form southeastern China but were introduced to Japan more than a 1000 years ago and have become a popular seasonal fruit grown in sub tropical climes such as southern Chiba. At this time of year all the Biwa trees are heavily laden with fruit which are often gifted to friends and neighbours. Orchardists individually wrap each one to protect the skins from marking and bruising, meaning they hit the shelves in pristine condition. They can be eaten raw, but need to be peeled and have the pips removed. Apparently it's also popular to make jam, jelly and chutney and can be fermented into a fruit wine!

We were very lucky to be gifted a box by the mother of a student and were very grateful. Japanese people never fail to surprise me with their generousity to others. Arigatougozaimasu!

Enishi & Pinedale Backpackers Lodge

Long time friends and self employed entrepreneurs 'ENISHI' packed up and started on a new chapter in their journey. It was great to see them all before they left and I wish them all the best for safe, successful and enjoyable future. They presence will be missed by all of us here in Kamogawa.

They were clearing out the closet and giving away the non-essentials and I was lucky enough to be given 'SPROUT', a surfing DVD, as well as this classic CD, 'RESEVOIR DOGS', which I used to listen to a lot when flatting with Timmy T down in Dunedin. I hope things are OK for him and his family from Christchurch and their PINEDALE Backpackers Lodge in Methven, New Zealand as they gear up for the ski/snowboard season @ Mt. Hutt. Thinking of you guys mate!

Monday, May 30th @ Kakou, Kamogawa

I was up at the crack of dawn once again in anticipation of some good surf. The wind was all wrong on this coast and there still wasn't a lot of swell coming in. A friend called and said he had the day off and was keen to drive over the inside (Uchibo Coast) of Tokyo Bay where there are a few hidden gems that occasionally light up. However, today was not the day and after a quick paddle at Iwai we made the call to head back.

We took a little detour via Tateyama and bought some homemade sausages from a German sausage shop, ABEND ESSEN, near the SDF Helicopter base for dinner later that evening then raced back to Kakou point in Kamogawa.

Dave Yamaya and Toshiya 'KERIS' Moriyama were taking photos. Hyota and Kazuki, Hiroki kun, Hiroe and Nako chan were just coming in as we paddled out. Jun was already out and Yukio soon joined us. It was super fun. The water was warm, sets were head high and it was offshore! Even the sun poked it's head out from time to time.

The homemade German sausages went down a treat! All types of varieties. I especially liked the ゴマチーズ　(sesame seed and cheese) as well as the ワサビソーセージ　(wasabi) ones.

Sei was busy in the kitchen, too and whipped up a couple of great tasting dishes and 玄米 (genmai) rice. It was almost a shame that the day had to end. Thanks for the good times everyone!

Typhoon #2 was on the radar this weekend. I was up at the crack of dawn (first time in awhile) and down at the beach checking the waves, hoping for some increase in size. It wasn't to be, but there were fun lefts and rights at Seaside and hardly anyone out in the overcast drizzly conditions, so good friend Dave and I went out for a surf. Toshizou-san was shooting some pictures and got this one of me going right (above) and sent it to me. Thank you Toshizou! (check his photo blog in the links on the right or click HERE).

The Digital Age

As of July, TV in Japan is going fully digital. Messages have been flashing up on our old TV warning us of the impending change for months. So, with a fresh pay check banked, it was off to the store. We'd been waiting and waiting and trying to second guess the potential sales campaigns ahead of the changes, but the events of March 11th kind of threw a spanner in the works. As it turned out though, now is as good a time as any to upgrade to digital with consumers having a bit more of say at the negotiation table with recent sales flat as people are wary with their savings and the economic outlook. We managed to get 25% off the ticket price! There was possibly an opportunity to haggle a bit harder, but we were satisfied and the customer service staff was really helpful and didn't push at all.

Now we have it, TV is COMPLETELY different!!! I'm loving it and looking forward to the 2011 Rugby World Cup to be held in NZ later this year. GO the ALL BLACKS!

A Job Well Done お疲れさま！

I've had these Brooks running shoes for probably near on 10 years!

Admittedly they haven't exactly been over burdened with excessive use, but they've done the job extremely well. Recently however, the soles have started to break apart and the cracks have worsened as the years take their toll. It's about time I replaced them, but finding shoes in my size in Japan is easier said than done. Last weekend my wife and I were in the city and went to the Nike outlet store in Makuhari, near Chiba. I managed to find 3-4 different models in my size, a real luxury of choice, and settled on these.

With any luck they'll help motivate me to get out a little more often and lose some of that winter layer that's built up this year. I figure that if my sister can have three kids and still run around lakes doing Contact Women's Triathlons, I should at least be able to run around the block once or twice.

Gyōza ( ギョーザ ) 餃子 Chinese Dumpling

Some friends came for dinner and set about making gyōza. For those who aren't familiar with gyōza, they're a kind of Chinese dumpling which typically consist of diced vegetables (namely cabbage and Chinese chives, although ours had shitake mushrooms, ginger and garlic) and ground meat (usually pork, but we used chicken). The girls were so keen to eat veges that we had enough filling to make 200!!!!

We pan-fried them, Yaki-gyōza (焼き餃子) style, first frying on one flat side, creating a crispy skin. Then, we added water with a little corn starch mixed in (which makes for a nice crispy base), the lid put on and steamed them until cooked.

We ate until our hearts and stomachs were content and still had a bunch leftover that we had to freeze for another day.

Another Action Packed Weekend!

The sun was shining Sunday and the weather was perfect for the outdoors. Winter is well and truly behind us finally and summer is knocking on the door! It would have been a travesty not to have made the most of the day, so my wife rallied the troops and we headed to Kuro Taki Koen (Black Waterfall Park) in Wada. The road in is narrow and windy, but it's only a short drive and is relatively unknown which means that you don't have to deal with oncoming traffic much, if at all. While the girls did a little Hula practice, the boys entertained themselves with soccer, frisbee, bug hunting and a flying fox. We had a bit of a picnic, played some dodgeball and then went for a quick walk in the bush to the waterfall and took a group photo to remember the occasion with.

On Monday, Aiko and Sei were keen for a surf. The waves were super small and there were only a few people out. Dave was tearing up the little lefts on his shortboard, then went in, grabbed his waterhousing and camera and took these photos of Aiko on the set of the day and me cross stepping to the nose. Thanks mate!

All in all, it was a great weekend! Fingers crossed there are more of the same all summer long!

My Minties Moment

(For those who aren't familiar with Minties, they're a mint flavoured chewy candy, popular in NZ and Australia, with an advertising campaign that stresses 'when things go pear-shaped you need a Mintie to cheer you up' hence there catch phrase 'it's moments like these you need Minties')

About a fortnight ago I had a shocker. It was a beautiful warm spring day and there were waves out front. Ken gave me a call to give me the heads up and I was in my wettie and out the door in a flash. When I got down to Kakou, Ken and Shinya were standing on the beach after scoring the early with a great tide. Ken had to work, but Shinya was up for a second surf and we paddled out. Everything was sweet and we got a few good ones before the tide filled in and we called it a day. All good so far. However, on the way home I saw a couple of fun rights breaking at Seaside. I thought 'what the heck' and decided to go for a quick surf again. I got two long peeling rights to start then went left, did a turn or two then tried to squeeze a last one in at the end. Should have kicked out...what a nice thing hindsight is.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, my board bounced back off the impact, I put my hand out just in time to partially block it, broke my board, cut my hand open on the fiberglass, and whacked my nose (possibly broken, but it was still straightish so didn't go to the hospital to find out). Blood everywhere, shocked looks, laughs, the whole spectrum. Rather embarrassing and well worthy of a Mintie. It's healed up fine now thanks to these wonder Band-Aids by Johnson & Johnson and a few conciliatory Minties.

GW = Golden Week

There was a lot going on in the world this time around with the royal wedding of Wills and Cate as well as the eventual demise of terrorist leader Bin Laden hitting the headlines.

However, in my little corner of the world, things were pretty chilled as we opted to take it easy and stay home.

Our holiday was shortened somewhat as we worked to make up lost lessons while the school was closed immediately following the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in March. But, when the holiday did eventually start, I kicked things off with a nice fun surf and a few little cover-ups. Good friend, Dave Yamaya, was testing his new camera and shot a couple of pictures.

After that we got a call from the in-laws in Osaka to ask what we were doing. They were free too so decided to visit for a couple of days. It was great to see them and I'm sure they were pretty happy to see us in our new place, too.

On May 3rd, Constitution Memorial Day, my wife and her friends danced hula at a charity event. There was a good turnout and they managed to raise in excess of ¥300,000 for the Red Cross Japan to aid the Tohoku appeal.

On May 4th, Greenery Day, my father in-law went fishing around the port. He didn't have a whole lot of luck, but the weather was fantastic and he seemed to really enjoy himself.

These girls danced beautifully and chanted with great confidence. They also looked great in their skirts which were hand made and printed by the girls themselves.

The LUANA Hula dancers were great and seemed to enjoy putting all their hard work practicing to the test on a stage. Well done!

Others to take the stage included this lady (above) who played the 'euphonium' in a duet with accompanying piano. It was a throwback to when I was in Junior High School and played one, especially having to lug it around on the crowded school bus and 1km walk home in the summer heat! There was one very BIG difference however, she could play it extremely well and had the people watching captivated, not running for the door.

There were also some Tahitian Dancers led by their exuberant teacher, Saori, which drew a big crowd in their coconut outfits!

A Charity Event with proceeds going to the Tohoku Red Cross Appeal will be held May 3rd @ Tojo Elementary School Gymnasium from 10:00am.
There will be a Bazaar market and various groups performing throughout the day including Hula dancers, Tahitian dancers, Belly dancers and Pianists.
The LUANA HULA Team will be on stage dancing 11:40am and again at 1:40pm. Make sure you get down to see them and support them if you have time.
Guri Guri will be there supplying delicious Spam Egg Musabi, so don't forget to bring ya wallet!

３・１１震災復興支援のために日本赤十字社へ義援金を寄付するためのイベントを行います。
今回の震災のあまりの悲惨な状況に「今、私たちに出来ること」音楽で何かできないかとの思いから始まった企画です。関係者、生徒さんご家族の中から出されたアイディアからふくらみました。

Local Pro Surfer, NAOHISA OGAWA, and Indian Shop, SIOUX, have been behind two fundraising projects for Tohoku. Proceeds from sales of these stickers will go to RED CROSS JAPAN and toward helping all the stranded animals that are suffering, too.
It's hoped that people will buy the stickers and stick them on their cars or surfboards, etc which will in turn serve to remind everyone that just because life is returning to normal for us, there's still plenty to do up north and donations/volunteers/etc will be needed and appreciated for quite some time.
If you're after one, or both, drop by one of the many surf shops in Kamogawa or Sioux and you're bound to find some. They won't break the bank, just ¥500 a piece.

A lone Sea Hawk

I'm pretty blessed to be living in such a beautiful place and to have been saved from the worst of what happened just a month and a half ago. Last night as the sun began to set, I thought it might be nice to take a little stroll around the block and get out of the house. The weather was great again today, but I've been hiding away with a bandage on my nose after a little mishap while surfing on Sunday! (Don't worry mum, it's still straight). The weather is warming, too and next week is Golden Week so I have a couple of days off! Can't wait! Just hope all my bumps and bruises and healed in time.

Cheers! Enjoying the last rays with Kouichi on what was a beautiful spring day. He had his first surf in nearly 4 months after recovering from a knee injury. Great reason to celebrate with a nice cold Kirin Ichiban. Wahooo! カンパイ！！

Below is the spread! We had a little bit of everything it seemed and everything went down a treat. I've got to make a special mention of the homemade edible raiyu(?). That tasted soooo good on the tofu! Thanks K&K for the good times.

Earth Day will be celebrated in Tokyo this weekend, April 23-24th.
It is however on April 22nd I do believe, which is today. The Earth needs all our thoughts and care after the recent and continuing bashing it's getting from nuclear fallout. Take a moment to think what you can do to help ease the load on the environment. Each little thing may need seem like much, but when they add up they have a tremendous influence!

Today also happens to be a special girl's 6th B'day!!!

Sei, Me and Aiko

Sunday was a classic spring day, fairly warm and windy, and enticing for people to get outside and do something! While I was hell bent on trying to get a surf in and playing the waiting game with the winds and the tides, Sei, Aiko and a friend visiting from Tokyo, Hiroko, went for a drive down the coast and a hike up into the hills overlooking Wada. All the new spring growth was abundant and the Yamazakura, or mountain cherry trees, were doing their thing, too.
After a busy day exerting themselves, the girls were keen for some good food and drinks. They went down to the store, bought a bunch of fresh veges, chicken and beer, then had ourselves a small NABE Party!
Thanks for the good times Sei and Hiroko! I hope you guys weren't feeling too hungover for work on Monday.... :)

With Easter set to fall on April 22-24th this year I guess shops in the west are stocking up on goodies. Here in Japan, Easter isn't celebrated and it is rare to stumble upon Easter chocolates, so the Easter Bunny had to make the long trek north from NZ. It looks like I scored this year!!!! Thanks MUM

The weather turned on, it warmed up and the sun came out, making the cherry blossoms bloom in all their glory. The timing couldn't have been better if we had tried. We got together with a close group of friends and did a BBQ under the cherry tree at a friends place. It was a really enjoyable time and one that helped to lift the spirits. Thanks to everyone that was there for making it such a special day.

I took this photo last Sunday, in the drizzle, up on the hill in Kamogawa. The buds were out and with a few warmer days this week, the weekend is looking good for cherry blossom viewing. The Tokyo Governor has asked people to refrain from drunken shenanigans which is understandable, given the recent events, but it's still a good chance to catch up with friends, have a beer and possibly fire up the grill (weather permitting).

I was wondering who these Americanos were surfing in front of Nonkey late last year. Some guys from Tokyo out for the day with their logs I figured. Turns out they come from Malibu, L.A. in California and are readily recognized for their nose riding abilities at First Point, Malibu! I stumbled upon one of the guys photos in a local surf mag I was flicking through at the store and remembered his face, googled his name and saw some of the pics from that day on a website 'secretpoint.' I guess they have their own company 'Firstpoint!', too. Anyway, they were just goofing around having a laugh and getting some photos/video but obviously made an impression as a few of the locals asked about them, assuming (since they were foreigners) they must have been friends.

"Reset" & Today's Sunset

Well, it's been a little over two weeks now since life as we know it took an unexpected turn, and I thought it was time to shed my shell a little. With nerves worn thin, rattled and on high alert for any aftershocks and possible tsunamis as well as constantly monitoring the situation unfolding in Fukushima and resultant radiation levels, we've kept a pretty low profile. This weekend the sun was out and the weather was nice and settled. I decided the best way to shed my cabin fever and the stress that had built up was to wash it all away with a quick surf. It was great to be back in the water, see familiar faces, and just talk about what's been going on with various people.
Then today, it was my wife's turn. We went for a drive into Tsudanama, to Yuzawaya (a craft shop with loads of material, etc). Now she's stocked up and got some projects on the go to keep her occupied and is all smiles. We also swung by Costco, grabbed some goodies and saw some of the liquefaction problems that have closed Tokyo Disneyland recently and plagued Chch in NZ.
We got back to Kamogawa just in time to witness a very welcome picture perfect beautiful sunset. Feeling GREAT!

Some semblance of normality today. The sun was out and the wind was calm, so we went for a walk down to the newly open Nonkey Cafe and had a coffee on the balcony. It was good to feel the warmth of the sun on our backs after being cooped up recently and the flowers along the Seaside Promenade were blossoming accordingly.

菜の花　キムチ,　or Rape flower Kimuchi, is a seasonal specialty that can only be found in early spring. I love my Kimuchi and each year I'm lucky enough to get to eat some of this, which is made down in Wada by 'Kimuchi Koujou' near the station. They have a variety of Kimuchi, a traditional Korean side dish, to choose from and you can't go wrong! It's all GOOD! It's also available from the Odoya Supermarket in Emi/Wada. Go get some while you can!

Cedar Pollen Allergies

Every spring millions of Japanese suffer from hay fever, or more specifically cedar pollen allergies. It's been reported that upward of 40% of people under 15 years old suffer the itchy eyes and runny nose symptoms associated with it, which can make life a misery. UNBELIEVABLE!! Somebody chop them down please! Apparently some states in the USA have made it a federal crime to plant Cedar trees because of the huge impact they have on health. The trees pictured are meant to be green. All of the yellow pollen you can see is like poison to me and many others. That's the real reason why so many people in Japan are wearing masks right now. Bring on Summer!

Me & Mum

It seems camper vans are all the rage these days in NZ. Mum has got in on the action with a sweet little number herself. Although I didn't get to use it this time (it only has seat belts for two and there were four of us), I wouldn't mind checking out some of the country in one of these someday. It sounds like she is getting great use out of it and loving every minute! I'm jealous, but there's no way it would fit down many of the narrow streets and in the small parking spaces here in Japan.

Bonsai/Tokyo/In-laws

A few weeks back, my father in-law, an avid 'BONSAI' enthusiast, made the trip to Tokyo with his wife to see a display of the top bonsai from the Pacific. The majority naturally were from Japan, but there were a few entrants from Taiwan and Hawaii as well. We tagged along and got to see and experience some true Japanese culture first hand. For me, the image of bonsai trees epitomises the extreme pride and care that the Japanese take in presentation. The detail is amazing. Some of the trees were well over 100 years old and had been passed down the generations from grandfather to father to son. Definitely worth seeing once!

The Bonsai event was held in Asakusa, a popular tourist area and one that boasts a pagoda and temple as well as a street selling traditional wares. It seemed like everyman and his dog was there. Good thing I'm tall enough to breath easy amongst the throngs.

After checking out Asakusa we went looking for a MONJAYAKI restaurant and came across this one, owned by a well known comedian. Osaka is famous for Okonomiyaki, a kind of savory pancake, but Tokyo has a different version of it called Monjayaki, which is almost impossible to describe. It's far from appetizing when you cook it but it tastes great, especially with an ice cold beer!

Stage 2: Christchurch Appeal

There has been a lot going on in this little old world of ours and while everyone here still sympathizes with what the people of Christchurch have been through and continue to go through, our attention has been abruptly bought to our own backyard following the huge Tohoku Earthquake on March 11th which was subsequently followed by the devastating Tsunami and the Nuclear Power Plant drama unfolding as I write this.

As a result, I felt it only right that the donation boxes that I had placed around town be collected early so that Japanese can focus on their own disaster relief fundraising. After much thought about whether to put the donations collected toward the Japanese Cause or not, it was decided that people had donated to Christchurch, New Zealand and that those same people would no doubt donate to Japan. It was not a decision I made lightly and I took on advice from several friends with vested interests.

Again, it was a fantastic effort by one and all and we managed to raise ¥83,600 which amounts to about $1,300NZ which is amazing!

What an amazing response!

With the help of friends we collected donations for the Red Cross Japan Christchurch Earthquake Appeal on Sunday, March 6th. We went to the Vitamin Walk Kamogawa event where Yae-san performed a live concert and announced to those in attendance what we were doing and although I had no personal connection with the majority, as they were visiting from Tokyo, they opened their hearts and gave generously. From there, we moved to Kamogawa Aeon (formerly Jusco) where friends from surfing, hula and work gathered to help. I met a lot of people that I hadn't seen in a long time who had read about our appeal in local newspapers and wanted to contribute. Again, people were extremely generous, from young to old, and I can't say thank you enough.

In total, we managed to collect ¥271,544 which equates to about $4,000 NZ. I've no doubt that the people of Christchurch will be very grateful for the kindness exhibited by all.

There are still collection boxes out in Kamogawa which can be found at all Surf shops and some restaurants/cafes/bars around town (a list can be found in an earlier post below). These will be collected on March 21st so don't delay.

If you wish to donate directly to the Red Cross Japan, that's possible too. Just go to there website and follow directions.

I'll keep you posted on what the final tally is. Fingers crossed we can get it up to $5,000NZ! Either way, it's already far exceeded any hopes I had when I started out on this project.

Mum's an absolute LEGEND! I was so busy when I ws back in NZ that I didn't have time to step inside a shop other than to pay for gas, buy a pie, some coffee or beer. So she stopped by the supermarket on the way to the airport and gave me this just as we were checking in. It tastes sensational and goes great with almost anything. I had it on a chicken pizza I made last week and it 'broke da mouth'!

As most of you know, there was a terrible earthquake in Christchurch, N.Z. on February 22nd. It was an absolute tragedy, with many unfortunate people, young and old, losing their lives. Among the dead are a number of Japanese that were in N.Z. studying English.

As an English teacher here in Japan and as someone with close links to Christchurch, with a Grandmother and Uncle living close to the city center along with many friends, I felt an urge to do something to help those survivors through these tough times and their hardship.

With the support of the Kamogawa City Office and the City Mayor, We have arranged to collect donations this Sunday, March 6th. Donations will be collected at two points. The first is at the Community Center by the beach park where the 'Vitamin Walk' event will conclude with a live concert by Yae-san. This will take place from around 3:00pm -3:40pm. Following that we will be collecting donations at the entrance to AEON (previously Jusco) Department store/Supermarket from 4:00pm-6:00pm. All donations collected will go to the RED CROSS EARTHQUAKE APPEAL.

These guys were dinner last night! The only thing about eating saba sashimi is that there is the rare chance that there may be some 'worms' (parasites) inside the fish that can then cause considerable pain as they latch on and eat away at your stomach. The only cure is a trip to the hospital where a doctor can insert a camera and vacuum down your throat and suck 'em out. Otherwise it takes about a week for the body to flush them out naturally. However, the dinner was good for me. I must have drowned any 'worms' with all the beer I drank.

This happened last year, too. Right when we wanted to go snowboarding! However, there were still some waves around so I hit the water again. It was good to make the most of the warm weather as it's forecast to drop back down to 9 degrees tomorrow.

Dave (Kamogawa Power) was down taking pictures and made my gangly, long limbed, uncoordinated self look not half bad. The man has a talent!
